Chinese Giant Salamander

Chinese Giant Salamander

Upon first look it appears to be a prop from Alien or perhaps a large phallic statue.

It is however the largest salamander in the world. When left to mature fully they can reach 180cm in length and over 11kg in weight. Many sadly don’t reach this today, being poached as a chinese delicacy long before they mature fully. Not convinced they would be that tasty though, they are covered in tough, wrinkly, bumpy skin. You wouldn’t want to meet one of these in a dark alley.

Sadly, these rather ‘tasty’ creatures are highly endangered, being poached to within an inch of their existence.
